Volunteers with an interest in healthcare who are adaptable and open to learning. No prior experience or qualifications are necessary, although the project can accommodate a range of medical specialties.

Volunteer program Introduction:

Join VCO Healthcare Outreach where volunteers participate in a special week-long campaign aimed at enhancing the health and well-being of local communities. Volunteers play a crucial role in testing and treating local residents for malaria, a prevalent disease in the region. Additionally, volunteers provide vital community health services and education on topics such as sexual health, hygiene, and nutrition.

Expectations

By participating in this project, volunteers ensure that rural communities receive crucial healthcare services, including malaria testing and treatment. You will spend the week visiting rural areas, delivering healthcare services to as many individuals as possible. Training and guidance in administering malaria tests will be provided to all volunteers.

If you have specialized training in a particular medical field, such as dentistry, there may be opportunities for tailored outreach activities. Please indicate any relevant skills or preferences in your application.

To participate in this program, volunteers under the age of sixteen must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or friend who is at least eighteen.

In order to participate in the program, volunteers who are 16 or 17 years old on the start date of the program must give VCO their parental consent. They may also be asked to submit further documentation to the local team.

Before leaving, all volunteers must submit to VCO a criminal background check, or if they are less than eighteen, they must submit two character reference letters.

It is mandatory for all volunteers to possess sufficient volunteer travel insurance.
Every volunteer needs to speak English well.

 

Safety and support

VCO follows industry-best practices and the most stringent health and safety procedures; these are regularly reviewed and improved.

It is recommended that all volunteers finish our engaging pre-departure training.
Every local team receives training in First Aid and best practices for managing volunteers.
The VCO Risk Management Policy must be adhered to by all programs offered by VCO.
Our local team offers round-the-clock in-country support to all volunteers.

As a Healthcare Outreach and Education volunteer in Arusha, Tanzania, you’ll contribute to the local community while experiencing personal and professional growth:

Orientation Plan

Volunteers should come in Arusha the day before orientation, which takes place on the first and fifteenth of every month.

After registering, please schedule your flights to arrive at Arusha Airport (ARK) or Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Your program fee includes airport pickup. We advise volunteers under the age of eighteen to travel abroad only with a notarized letter of parental approval. Your program price includes transportation to and from the volunteer accommodation in Arusha, which includes lodging the night before orientation. A local team member will meet you at the airport upon your arrival.

We can set up pickup in Arusha for the day before your orientation if you’re traveling throughout Tanzania prior to the start of your volunteer program. occurs in one of the volunteer houses in Arusha, commencing on the day of your choice in the morning. Orientation will start the Monday after the holiday or the following Monday if your start date falls on a weekend or public holiday.

First Day

On the first day of the volunteering placement, you will be escorted to the project by our local staff and introduced to the staff at the project you will be working with.

Weekdays

Work and hours are dependent on the project and placement that each volunteer is working at. A typical volunteer day would be as follows:

7:30 AMBreakfast at the volunteer house or homestay.
8:00 AMVolunteers leave home and travel to their placements. Work and hours are dependent on the project and placement that each volunteer is working at.
1:00 PMWork at the placement usually ends. Volunteers are free to travel home for lunch at their accommodation, prepare for the next day or do some shopping and sightseeing.

Weekends

Tanzania is a wildlife enthusiast’s paradise. In your spare time, you may go on a safari to observe the astounding array of animal species that make Tanzania home of lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards, and rhinos and wildebeest migration..

Fantastic marketplaces, a day-long walk up neighboring Mount Meru, and information on the Maasai and Meru tribes can all be found at Arusha. You may also reserve some time before or after your program to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, or you can take a quick trip to Zanzibar for a weekend of sun and sandy beaches.
